Why is blood important? Why does your body need it? Here are some of the reasons why it is very important to have blood flowing through your body. These are the functions of the blood that are vital for keeping the body’s health. The first function is the transport of important substances. The blood is responsible for collecting and bringing deoxygenated blood to the lungs. This is to prevent carbon dioxide from staying in the body and damaging cells. The blood is also responsible for collecting and bringing oxygenated blood to the heart to be pumped to the different organs of the body. The body needs this oxygen to function at its best. The blood also transports waste materials to the excretory system to be removed as urine, faeces and sweat. Other things that are being
transported are hormones, enzymes, vitamins, nutrients, proteins that are essential for blood clotting and blood cells. The second function is to regulate the body temperature and the acidity level of blood. It is very important for the body to have a maintained temperature. When it’s too hot or too cold, the organs may be affected such as in the case of fevers and chills. How does the blood maintain a balanced temperature? It travels to the skin and allow the heat to escape through the pores. Likewise, it is also important to maintain a good pH balance. If the blood becomes too acidic, the cells and other components will die. It is very important that the pH balance is only between 6.8 and 7.4. The third function is to remove toxins. Blood passes through the kidneys to be filtered. This process is very important to separate the toxins and clean the blood. The toxins stay in the kidneys and are eliminated from the body through urine and sweat. This is the reason why it is important to drink water. The more water you drink, the faster the toxins will be flushed out from the body because. Water will also lessen the burden of the kidneys in cleaning the blood. The fourth function is to regulate salt content and electrolytes. When you urinate, a huge amount of salt in the body is being removed as well. This salt is just the excess of what your body needs. The circulation of blood allows the excess to be removed by the excretory system. This is an important process as too much salt can lead to stones. When there is too much sodium in the blood because of one’s diet, this can also lead to being overweight because of fluid retention. These are some of the reasons why blood is important to the body. You need to ensure that your blood is circulating well all the time to be able to do these functions.
